MOSTAR REGENERATION PROJECT 2004
‘NORTH CAMPUS’ Mostar Bosnia Herzegovina
The North Campus is conceived as an education - led development area with the university acting as the dynamo of urban regeneration. It is believed that the advancement in the quality of education will be followed by the increase in the quality of urban life, economy and public welfare. North Campus area will be dominated by the united University of Mostar. The campus area will belong to the University, but will be open to public and thoroughly integrated with the rest of the city.
The proposed education system will not only comprise a better quality university education but also courses for adult learning and public education. In this way, there will be a bottom-up educational approach catering the needs of the common laymen as well as the cultivated public. The educated individuals will also be better candidates for employment, and skilled workforce will attract future investors. With this scenario, the unification of the University in a single location will provide the necessary contact between the Croatian and Bosnian people, hopefully erasing the last remnants of hostility within the next few generations.
The project is based on the “campus-city” concept focusing on the educational buildings are elevated on columns to integrate different functions; education, commercial, cultural facilities, built on two different type of modules: Long types for educational, short types for administrative – depending on the pattern of the city. The main definitive aspect of the planning approach is superposition of different activity areas; the commercial area, public education facilities and housing are all intermixed, finishing with a techno park including business centres, guest house, sports club, theme park, concert area and water treatment facilities, functioning together as a multi-purpose zone. In this way, the functions will form a homogeneous, integrated as a whole, as opposed to strictly divided functional zones.
